SIA BS7858 Security Screening

WHAT IS SIA BS7858 SCREENING?

Security guarding companies which need staff screening to gain or maintain their Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) accreditation require security officers to be screened to BS7858.

SIA licensed organisations comply with the law if they are involved in any of the following licensed activities:

  • Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT)
  • Close Protection (CP)
  • Door Supervision (DS)
  • Key Holding (KH)
  • Public Space Surveillance (CCTV)
  • Security Guarding (SG)
  • Vehicle Immobilisation (VI)

BS7858 security screening is the best practice procedure published by the British Standards Institution. It is the background screening (vetting) of individuals employed in an environment where the security and safety of people, goods or property is a requirement of the employing organisation’s operations and/or where such security screening is in the public and/or corporate interest.

DBS checks aren’t included in this type of BS7858 because the SIA licence holder will have already undergone a Criminality Check in order to get an SIA licence. What we do however is confirm that the SIA licence is still valid.

SIA BS7858 screening includes:

  • 5 or 10 Year Written Career History
  • SIA Licence confirmation
  • Credit Search (Consumer Information Check)
  • ID Verification and Right to Work Check
  • 5 Year Address Verification

Staffvetting.com – an NSI Gold Accredited BS7858 screening provider

We are an NSI Gold accredited BS7858 screening provider. The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is recognised as the leading certification body for the security and fire protection sectors in the UK. We were the first company to achieve this level (via Nova Risk Management) and are proud to continue to promote quality services and systems.

The benefit of working with an NSI Gold approved company

“NSI approved companies are all subject to a rigorous audit programme annually. They may be required to make improvements e.g. in their operations or competency, or have their approval withdrawn, subject to auditor findings.

NSI is the UK’s premier UKAS accredited independent certification body within the security systems, guarding services and fire safety sectors.

Buyers and specifiers are reassured their NSI approved security and fire safety providers are reputable and trustworthy with the expertise to translate needs into dedicated solutions.

Many insurers recognise NSI approved companies and the systems they install. Check with your insurer whether having a system installed and maintained by an NSI approved company enables you to receive a discount on your insurance premium.”

What is the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme?

The Private Security Industry Act 2001 requires the SIA to establish a “system of inspection for providers of security services, under which those organisations who satisfactorily meet the agreed standards may be registered as approved, and may advertise themselves as such”. BS7858 is more comprehensive than other UK standard screenings. It involves a more rigorous process to ensure employers have a peace of mind that the people they are employing are trustworthy.

The objective of the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme is to raise performance standards and to assist the private security industry in developing new opportunities. The scheme is voluntary and was developed in consultation with representatives from across the industry; it only covers those parts of the industry that are regulated by the SIA and the Private Security Industry Act 2001 (as amended). There is a single scheme, with sector-specific approval based on a relevant set of qualifying criteria.
